Tai says: There are three kinds of practitioners of concentration. [When two] both wish to produce a transformation regarding the same object, both people have attained mastery in resolve and supernormal power. One wishes to make fire, and the second wishes to make water. These two supernormal powers do not obstruct each other; both have completed this supernormal power, and neither is superior, so they do not overpower each other. If one were superior and overpowered the other, then one would succeed and the other would fail. Because neither is superior and they do not overpower each other, initially neither succeeds. As [they continuously] strive without stopping, subsequently and immediately thereafter, one becomes unobstructed in supernormal power regarding this object and can transform it as desired, while the second's supernormal power is obstructed. Why is it that initially both fail, but later one succeeds and one fails? How should the reason for this be understood?
