Within the explanation, it explains the five phrases, first distinguishing the purification of the non-concentrated stage. Herein, there are two rounds [of interpretation]. In the first explanation: To counteract the first obstacle of violating precepts, one cultivates the mental attention of correct comprehension, recognizing violations as faults. To eliminate the second fault—the three kinds of distraction—one cultivates three mental attentions: to counteract grasping at the past without knowing impermanence and make one know impermanence, one cultivates the mental attention that conforms to and gathers the objective support; to counteract not knowing that present objects of the five desires are suffering, where investigative thought gives rise to distraction from bad views and hearsay, making one discern their marks, one cultivates the mental attention that discerns their marks to counteract that investigative thought; to counteract distraction from the former two kinds that is habitual over a long time and difficult to eliminate, one cultivates the mental attention that trains the mind which is their basis. To eliminate the third—clinging possessively to the internal body and giving rise to the grasping at an aggregation—one cultivates the mental attention that analyzes the aggregation. To eliminate the fourth—clinging possessively to external objects as pure—one cultivates the mental attention on impurity.
