In the second round of explanation: The first mental attention can sever false mindfulness: that is, the mental attention of correct comprehension counteracts distraction of following mindfulness focused on the past. The second mental attention can sever the two attachments of clinging possessively to the internal body and external objects: that is, the mental attention that conforms to that objective support counteracts the third and fourth among the secondary afflictions. The third mental attention severs all distraction of bad views and so forth: that is, the mental attention that discerns those marks counteracts that investigative thought, counteracting bad views arising from distraction and agitation. The fourth mental attention severs distraction maintained by prior habituation: that is, what is counteracted by the mental attention that trains its basis is obvious. The fifth mental attention can sever the conception of a pure sentient being in the body: that is, one should cultivate the mental attention that analyzes the aggregation. The sixth mental attention can sever the four types of greed: that is, the mental attention on impurity can sever the four foods of color, touch, shape, and service. According to the Hīnayāna explanation: cultivating contemplation of blue-black lividness counteracts greed for color—greed for colors such as red and white; contemplation of the skeleton removes greed for touch; contemplation of the separation of joints removes greed for bodily shape; contemplation of a corpse removes greed for service. In this second round, it does not discuss violating precepts: it takes the first mental attention of correct comprehension to remove the second distraction of following mindfulness regarding past objects; it takes the second mental attention conforming to that objective support to bypass and counteract the subsequent greed of clinging possessively to the internal body and external objects, understanding that the internal body and external objects are impermanent dharmas and should not be clung to possessively—this counteracts attachment to the body of the desire realm; the third mental attention of discerning those marks again removes the aforementioned distraction from bad views, bad hearsay, and agitation; the fourth mental attention of training again removes the aforementioned distraction maintained by the power of prior habituation; the fifth mental attention to cultivate analyzing the aggregation separately severs the conception of a pure sentient being in the body—this counteracts attachment to the body of the form realm; the sixth mental attention on impurity can sever the four types of greed, greed for deportment of coming and going, service, and so forth.
