Third, the section on objective referents (vastu) is explained. There are three categories here. First, the five views and conceit are called lacking an objective referent: the self that is the intentional object of identity view lacks substance, hence it is called lacking an objective referent; the other four views and conceit arise depending on identity view, hence they are called lacking an objective referent. Second, greed and anger arise conditioned on a small degree of purity or impurity, hence they are called having an objective referent. Third, ignorance and doubt: if they are conjoined with views and so on, they are called lacking an objective referent; if conjoined with greed and so on, they are called having an objective referent. In principle, greed and so on also extend to lacking an objective referent. Thus the Abhidharmasamuccaya says: 'Identity view, conceit, and craving have objects lacking an objective referent.' Here, the three categories are stated in terms of the majority.
