Eighth, understanding realization. The Supplement says: The four truths are called realization, as explained in the treatise above; they are the seven wholesome dharmas in the Vibhāṣā, with the addition of contemplating origin again—namely, karma as the origin of feeling; adding this one makes eight. 'Contemplating the intrinsic nature' is contemplating the substance of feeling as suffering. 'Contemplating the conditions for arising in the present life' refers to arising as the origin of feeling, the truth of origin. 'Contemplating the conditions for the cessation of arising in the present life' contemplates the cessation of feeling. 'The conditions for arising in the future' contemplates karma as the origin of future feeling; arising and karma are both capable of generating feeling, hence called 'the conditions for arising'. 'Contemplating the conditions for the cessation of both kinds of arising' is the truth of the path, which can cease the preceding two kinds of contemplation. 'The conditions for the conditions of arising' contemplates the gratification of feeling, which further serves as a condition for the karma that causes arising; therefore it is called 'the conditions for the conditions of arising'. 'Contemplating the conditions for the conditions of cessation': cessation is the truth of cessation; the previous explanation said that the truth of the path ceases arising and karma, serving as the cause for cessation. Now, contemplating feeling again as a fault can cease gratification and assist the path in revealing cessation; this is called 'contemplating the conditions for the conditions'. 'And contemplating cessation' is contemplating the truth of cessation again.
