In the second, distinguishing what is countered, the first concentration counters five things. 1. Sensual lust: this refers to lust for the five sensual pleasures; lust pervades the three realms, but by qualifying it with 'sensual', it is called 'sensual lust'. 3. Distress and suffering: Question: The first dhyāna removes distress and suffering; why does the second concentration also speak of removing suffering? In the first concentration, the intrinsic nature of suffering and the two bondages are severed, yet its gross and heavy, intractable nature is only severed in the second concentration. Or according to the Abhidharma, the three consciousnesses of the first dhyāna are the support of suffering; speaking in terms of severing the support, it is said that the second dhyāna severs suffering. As for 'exultation', there are two explanations: one explanation is that it is superlative joy—the former is its entity, and the latter is its superlative function; another explanation is that mental application associated with joy stirs joy, hence it is called 'exultation'.
