According to Śāriputra's Abhidharma, in explaining the four dhyānas, both the fundamental concentrations and the preparatory access concentrations each have eighteen; the intermediate concentration has four: 1. investigation, 2. joy, 3. pleasure, 4. one-pointedness of mind; and no factors are established for the four formless concentrations. The two schools of Sthavira and Saṃmatīya both establish eleven factors: the first concentration has five, whose names are identical to this treatise; the second concentration has three, excluding investigation and reflection; the third has two, 1. pleasure and 2. concentration; the fourth concentration has one, which is the factor of one-pointedness of mind; hence there are eleven. The Daji jing explains seventeen factors. The Benye jing says: There are thirty-eight factors: eighteen in the four dhyānas, identical to the explanation of this treatise; the four formless [attainments] each have five factors: 1. ideation, 2. serenity, 3. mindfulness, 4. śamatha-vipaśyanā, 5. one-pointedness of mind. Here, the faculty of equanimity is called 'serenity', and wisdom is called 'śamatha-vipaśyanā'; relying on calm, wisdom is generated, and factors are named comprehensively in terms of the self-entity and the supporting concentration; hence there are thirty-eight factors.
