Ji says: 'Coarseness' is the incompetence that conforms to the basis. Because the three consciousnesses in the first dhyāna still have joy that is not yet full, coarseness is not yet exhausted; the three consciousnesses and the faculty of suffering conform to each other, whereas joy directly opposes the faculty of suffering. This 'severance' is the severance of the nature of being attached to coarseness and outflows on the faculty of suffering and the like; it does not mean severing seeds or the conjunction with consciousness, because that was already severed earlier. If they were unwholesome seeds, one could say they are already severed in the first dhyāna because they are conjoined with consciousness. If they are wholesome or indeterminate, an arhat still gives rise to them. As for the contaminated second dhyāna, it suppresses the coarseness of suffering because it is contaminated; the uncontaminated second dhyāna severs the coarseness because of uncontaminated joy. It is not that non-regressing practitioners and the like have this: entering the first dhyāna, coarseness arises.
