Ce, Guang, and others say: 'Immovability and non-retrogression are stated in terms of noble persons. If stated in terms of ordinary beings, even those of sharp faculties may retrogress. Therefore, although Devadatta was of sharp faculties, he retrogressed. Thus, although Devadatta was of an immovable nature, he retrogressed from meditative absorption. Or, there are those who retrogress and pass away to take a lower rebirth upon the exhaustion of their life span—as in the case of being born in the Brahmā world, where immovable karma drags the conventional seed of the fundamental consciousness, its functionality increasing for twenty kalpas to falsely compose a life-faculty; when the twenty kalpas are completed it is called the exhaustion of the life span, and the momentum of the karma capable of projecting it is also exhausted, which is called the exhaustion of karma. Furthermore, there is the karma that brings about those palaces, garments, and so forth, called merit; when the twenty kalpas are completed it is called the exhaustion of merit. Due to these three kinds of exhaustion, one retrogresses to be born in the desire realm.'
