備等述西方二解。一云，爾時耳識無同緣意識，意識不移前定境故，但由耳識聞聲引彼意識次念出定，一云，爾時意識正緣定境，兼亦緣聲，今謂五識亦與意識同緣一境。

Bei and others relate two Western explanations. One says: at that time the ear-consciousness has no mental consciousness taking the same object, because the mental consciousness does not shift from its previous object of meditative absorption; it is merely that the ear-consciousness hearing the sound leads that mental consciousness in the next moment to emerge from meditative absorption. The other says: at that time the mental consciousness is precisely taking the object of meditative absorption, while concurrently also taking the sound as its object; now we say that the five consciousnesses also take the same object together with the mental consciousness.
