Regarding the first: Jing says: 'The first six are in essence non-concentrated; the latter six explain non-concentration according to their meanings. Or, because they are not yet complete, they are called stages of non-concentration: that is, those who have not yet realized the attention of the culmination of expedient means, having attained the preliminary absorption, possess the first five attentions but have not attained the sixth, which is called non-concentrated. Or, because of defilement, it is called a stage of non-concentration up to "frequently giving rise to craving-attachment": that is, within the four divisions of meditative absorption of the root stage, the pure meditative absorption of the division of retrogression alternates with craving, hence it is called a stage of non-concentration. Or, because of non-purity, it is called a stage of non-concentration: that is, those who have not yet perpetually eliminated the latent defilements; when an ordinary being suppresses the fetters to attain meditative absorption, because it is not pure, it is called non-concentrated.'
