Regarding the metaphor of water and waves: as in the Laṅkāvatārasūtra, Aśvaghoṣa's treatise, and so forth. Regarding the metaphor of a mirror and images: as in the Sandhinirmocanasūtra and so forth. However, these two metaphors are as explained in the fifty-first [fascicle]: on account of the ultimate truth the eight consciousnesses are of one substance, just as waves are not separate from water; also on account of the conventional truth the eight consciousnesses are individually distinct, as the functions of the waves are different—as the masters of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha held, taking this text as proof.
