In the bhūmi with mental activity, it states: 'Just as waves depend on a rushing torrent, or just as mirror-images depend on a clear mirror.' As the two explanations in the fifty-first [fascicle] state, from the standpoint of the ultimate truth, the eight consciousnesses are of one substance, just as waves are not separate from the water; from the standpoint of conventional truth, the eight consciousnesses are distinct, because the functions of the waves are different. As with the positions of the two masters in the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, this passage is used as proof for the Great Master's doctrine.
