17.69

答第八問以明斷惑勝利中，云謂隨證得超越憂者，斷欲界修惑，超越苦者斷初定修惑，斷第二定修惑超喜，斷第三修超樂，斷第四修，超借眼識色想，又超借彼眼耳身識有對之想，又超第四禪遍緣於自地十處之想，及超緣下十二處想。由斷見惑超惡趣苦，及超女人身，第八有業，北洲無想天業，又超生等八苦。

In answering the eighth question to clarify the benefits of abandoning afflictions: regarding "namely, in accordance with what is realized, transcending grief," this is abandoning the cultivation-abandoned afflictions of the desire realm; "transcending suffering" is abandoning the cultivation-abandoned afflictions of the first dhyāna; abandoning the cultivation-abandoned afflictions of the second dhyāna transcends joy; abandoning the cultivation-abandoned afflictions of the third dhyāna transcends pleasure; abandoning the cultivation-abandoned afflictions of the fourth dhyāna transcends the ideation of color borrowed from eye-consciousness, also transcends the ideation of resistance borrowed from the eye-, ear-, and body-consciousnesses, and further transcends the ideation of universally taking the ten bases of its own stage as objects in the fourth dhyāna, as well as transcending the ideation of taking the twelve lower bases as objects. By abandoning the afflictions of seeing, one transcends the suffering of the miserable destinies, transcends female bodies, karma leading to an eighth existence, and karma of the northern continent and the realm of non-conception, and furthermore transcends the eight sufferings such as birth.
