基云:字義通達,達為無常者,即字所詮之義可轉變隨方處義即立故名無常,如眼名眼亦名照了導等即字所因義是無常也。故知即名句等亦是無常可改轉故。又此字因等諸行無常義,故名字義無常也。

Ji says: Thorough penetration of the meaning of syllables as impermanent means that the meaning expressed by a syllable can change and be established in accordance with location and meaning, hence called impermanent; for example, the eye is named 'eye', and also named 'illuminating', 'guide', and so on; that is, the meaning upon which the syllable relies is impermanent. Therefore, one knows that names, phrases, and so forth are also impermanent, because they can be altered. Furthermore, because of the impermanent meaning of these syllables, causes, and all conditioned phenomena, it is called the impermanence of the meaning of syllables.
