論云一、「字通達,通達為常」者,即如𧙃、阿字,知為常,必不可改轉,此是字本故也。 「字義通達,達為無常」者,即字所證之義可轉變,隨方處義則立,故名無常也。如眼名眼,亦名為照、了、道等等,即字所因義是無常也。故知即名、句等亦是無常,可改轉故。又此字因等諸行無常義,故名義無常也。

The treatise says, "First, 'comprehension of syllables: comprehending them as permanent'"—this is like knowing that syllables such as *oṃ* or *a* are permanent and definitely unalterable, because they are the root of syllables. "'Comprehension of the meaning of syllables: comprehending it as impermanent'" means that the meanings attested by syllables can shift; meanings are established in accordance with locality, and are therefore called impermanent. For instance, the eye is called "eye," but it is also called "illuminator," "discerner," "path," and so forth; thus the meanings upon which syllables are based are impermanent. Hence we know that names, sentences, and the like are also impermanent, because they can be altered. Furthermore, because these conditioned phenomena that are the causes and so forth of syllables are impermanent in meaning, it is called the impermanence of meaning.
