Regarding contact as food: fascicle ninety-four states that tainted contact can serve as food for joy and pleasure. The Weishi also states: tainted [contact], at the very moment of apprehending an object, appropriates joy, pleasure, and beneficial equanimity, and can perform the function of food. The intention of these words is to reveal that the contact associated with the eight consciousnesses, which is tainted across the three realms, appropriates joy, pleasure, and beneficial equanimity to sustain and benefit the body, and is the entity of contact as food. If it induces pain, grief, or non-beneficial equanimity, its entity is not food, because it does not sustain or benefit. Therefore the Cheng weishi lun states: although this contact is associated with all consciousnesses, that belonging to the six consciousnesses has the pre-eminent sense of food; this demonstrates that contact as food is common to association with all eight consciousnesses. This implicitly accords with Vasubandhu's Mahāyānasaṃgrahabhāṣya, fascicle three, which states: here, contact as food belongs to the six groups of consciousness because contact with coarse and prominent objects nourishes pre-eminently, not including other contacts.
