Furthermore, Master Śīlabhadra says: The sixth mental consciousness either relies on the five consciousnesses or takes objects through them. The fiftieth fascicle states that it either relies on them or takes objects such as past and future through instruction. At the initial moment of rebirth, there are no five consciousnesses and it does not take objects through instruction, so there is no mental consciousness. Although at other times in the formless realm it does not rely on the five consciousnesses or instruction, by the power of having repeatedly practiced relying on names when previously in the desire realm, the mental consciousness arises on its own at other times in the formless realm. At the beginning of receiving retribution, one must give rise to a retribution mind; because the retribution mind of the fundamental consciousness arises spontaneously, it is able to arise, whereas the retribution minds of the six consciousnesses depend on other conditions to arise. At initial rebirth, because there are no other conditions, the retribution minds of the six consciousnesses do not arise. From this initial rebirth onward, all minds that arise spontaneously and abide by their own nature are the fruition minds of the fundamental consciousness, excluding the wholesome and defiled [minds] of the six consciousnesses and the remaining minds of the four purposive indeterminates of the six consciousnesses. The fruition-born minds of the six consciousnesses arise due to other conditions and do not always arise spontaneously; they are also minds of purposive indeterminate, and the defilement of the seventh consciousness is also included among them. Apart from these, all the rest are termed minds of the fundamental consciousness abiding by their own nature. If the mind becomes free from desire, the mind of the fundamental consciousness abiding by its own nature still persists in continuity, excluding the wholesome of the lower realms and the minds of the four purposive indeterminates; one should know that this mind of the fundamental consciousness is also fruition. The fruition at the time of freedom from desire is identical to the fruition before freedom from desire.
