The passage from "if born in the naraka…" to "there is a continuity of pain and distress born of fruition": In the state of rebirth in the hells, there is definitely no mental consciousness, but solely the equanimous feeling of the ālayavijñāna; immediately from the second thought onward, there is a continuity of pain and distress born of fruition. While previously in the discussion of the twenty-two faculties it explained hellish suffering, where extreme distress is also called suffering, that was stated based on basic existence. Now, the statement that pain and distress immediately follow fruition is made based on entering a part of basic existence from the state of rebirth.
