Twenty-first, phenomena to be cultivated. Regarding the four cultivations, they are mostly spoken of in terms of a single essence. The Tripiṭaka Master says: "Removal" is like contemplating twenty people where the sign-aspect of impurity appears before one, and the pure aspect of the archetype and reflection no longer appears—this is called "cultivation of removal." Furthermore, removing the gross heaviness of body and mind through the power of contemplation and obtaining pliancy is called "cultivation of removal." In the text, merely removing and cutting off unwholesome attention that has already arisen is called "cultivation of removal." In this cultivation of antidotes there are four antidotes, which below are correlated with the seven attentions: one should know that here, from apprehension of marks up to resolved determination is called "cultivation of the revulsion antidote," which has three: apprehension of marks, observation, and resolved determination. From detachment up to completion of the application is called "cultivation of the abandonment antidote," in which there are three attentions: detachment, gathering joy, and completion of the application. The fruit-attention is called "cultivation of the retention antidote." From this above, that is, all these seven attentions are subsumed under whatever superior bhūmi or higher bhūmi: earlier it clarified that the seven attentions are in the preparatory bhūmi; now it clarifies that when the seven attentions advance in cultivation to the end, they follow the fundamental bhūmi. One should know that all are called "cultivation of the remote antidote," because the seven attentions, with respect to what was previously abandoned, provide remote warding off and defense—all are remote antidotes.
