18.347

修戒，名受持修者，防護六根名修根本，是前第四對治修。若靜慮地作意修名為修心，是前第一得修。若諦現觀知修名為修慧者，是前第二習修。

Cultivating discipline is termed 'cultivation of acceptance and maintenance', because guarding the six sense faculties is termed cultivating the root; this is the previously mentioned fourth, 'cultivation of counteraction'. If it is the cultivation of mental application belonging to the stage of dhyāna, it is termed 'cultivating the mind', which is the previously mentioned first, 'cultivation of attainment'. If it is cultivating through the knowledge of direct realization of the truths, it is termed 'cultivating wisdom', which is the previously mentioned second, 'cultivation of familiarization'.
