大乘修中，及由趣向無上足跡者，菩提涅槃先聖行處名為足跡，今時趣向即是，舊云無上道，道足所履遊也。

In the cultivation of the Mahāyāna, where it says "and through proceeding towards the unexcelled footprints": the places where the past noble ones walked towards bodhi and nirvāṇa are called "footprints"; proceeding towards them in the present is precisely this. In older translations it was called the "unexcelled path" (mārga), the path being that which is trodden and traversed by feet.
