Tai says: 'Outshining' (*ying*) means depriving/overcoming. Because the names of the four aggregates are able to sever all the personal selves of the four aggregates' own spheres, this is called realizing the principle of the selflessness of persons; because the names of the selfless four aggregates outshine and deprive the aspect of a personal self, the text says 'names outshine all selves.' Another explanation: sentient beings mostly conceive a self among the four aggregates; observing that there are only four aggregates and not seeing a personal self, the names of the aggregates therefore outshine and deprive all selves. Relying on conventional names, one conceives that all things have an intrinsic nature; if one observes that there are only conventional names and does not see the substantial reality of phenomena, it expresses the principle of the selflessness of phenomena: conventional names outshine and deprive the self of phenomena. The earlier [passage] clarifies that the names of the four aggregates outshine the personal self; since the two names are different, what they outshine and pertain to is also distinct.
