Tenth, distinguishing the differences among all dharmas. Jing says: First, by mark: that is, each of the eighteen realms has its mark; the support is the mark of faculties, the active is the mark of consciousness, and that which is dwelled in is the mark of dusts (objects); alternatively, the support is the causes and conditions of all dharmas, the active is the conditioned, and dwelling is the unconditioned. Second, by substance: all dharmas have substances such as form and mind based on causes; that is, the substance of dharmas is clarified based on the distinctions of their own-marks. Third, by activity: all dharmas each have activities and functions, meaning their respective functions as well as the mutually opposed functions of wrong action and right action. Fourth, by dharma: namely, the dharmas of defilement, purity, the two truths, and so forth. Fifth, by cause and effect: proximate and remote are causes, distinguished by karma across the three times; and pleasant and unpleasant are effects.
