Regarding the term "śramaṇa": this translates as "diligent effort"; just as the uninterrupted path uses diligent effort and full strength to sever all defilements, it is called "diligent effort"; it is also called "stilling evil." [Regarding the three kinds of brahmans:] first, nominal brahmans, such as the northern barbarians of the Snowy Mountains who style themselves brahmans; second, brahmans by birth/clan, namely the superior clan of the brahman caste among the four castes of the five Indias; third, brahmans of correct practice, namely those from the four castes who leave household life to cultivate worldly and supramundane correct practice. "Brahman" here translates as "pure aspiration."
