Regarding "the remaining mental applications are outpourings of direct realization, not subsumed under direct realization; that is, the mental application that discerns characteristics and the mental application of resolute intention": discerning characteristics and resolute intention are not subsumed under the six direct realizations. Why is this? Reflection belongs to the desire realm, whereas these two belong to the concentrated levels; hence they do not subsume one another. Faith and resolute belief in the Three Jewels take pleasure in contemplating [them], whereas these two mental applications are practices of revulsion and do not take the Three Jewels as their object; thus faith does not subsume them. The two mental applications differ from morality in terms of matter and mind; thus they also do not subsume each other. Direct realization of the truths is non-conceptual knowledge, marginal direct realization is the path of seeing characteristics, and ultimate direct realization is in the stage of the non-learner; these two mental applications are distinct from these two, and thus they do not subsume one another either. It is only because the subsequent knowledge after direct realization practices revulsion that it gives rise to these two kinds of mental applications; therefore, they are subsumed under the outpourings of direct realization.
