Twenty-second: Under which direct realization are boundless knowledge and the aids to penetration subsumed? Answer: They are not subsumed under direct realizations, but are their outpourings. Buque offers several explanations. The first explanation: in the preparatory stage prior to the path of seeing, generally contemplating the emptiness and selflessness of boundless dharmas is called boundless knowledge. The second explanation: relying on the sequence of the nine grades of the fourth meditation, the wisdom arising from lower to middle, and from middle to the highest of the high, is called edge knowledge; because this knowledge possesses the highest without any surpassing it, it is called boundless knowledge. This knowledge does not take a portion as its object, whereas direct realization takes a portion as its object; thus they do not subsume one another. The roots of goodness of the aids to penetration are the preparatory means for entering the noble [state]; their essence is cultivated wisdom, not reflection or faith; being tainted, they are not morality, nor are they subsumed under the latter three realizations; this can be known, and so on. Knowledge of the selflessness of all dharmas, the impermanence of all conditioned things, the tranquility of nirvāṇa, and so forth is called boundless knowledge.
