Tai says: the first two secondary defilements arise conditioned by the internal and external and serve as causes of deterioration of concentration; the next two secondary defilements also condition the internal and external and constitute the substance of the deterioration of concentration; fifth, properly grasping the three signs of concentration—calm, exertion, and equanimity—counters the first and second; sixth, the contemplation of impurity counters the second and fourth, because the second and fourth arise as agitation and distraction conditioned by external five desires, and are therefore countered by the contemplation of impurity; seventh, the perception of light serves as an expedient means able to give rise to the fifth and sixth antidotes, and thus serves as the support and foundation of those two antidotes. The two explanations are largely the same.
