In explaining the first sūtra, Jing says: If, according to nominal convention, one grasps the five entities as existent, it is taught that they are without intrinsic nature; if, apart from those nominal conventions, one allows those five dharmas each to have an individual essence, it is taught that they have intrinsic nature. That is to say, there is no dharma-essence expressed by words; there is only the dharma-essence apart from words; hence it is said that there is non-duality.
