Below, clarifying the two graspings re-explains the supports. There are five preparatory applications: 1. lust; 2. anger; 3. the preparatory application of union: due to lust, one generates the preparatory application of union; 4. the preparatory application of separation: due to anger, one generates the preparatory application of separation; 5. the preparatory application of following along with equanimity: towards neutral objects, wanting to generate the preparatory application of equanimity. There are two preparatory applications of conventional designation by names: 1. not produced by written words, meaning grasping 'What thing is this? How is this thing? This thing is what? How is this thing?' The Tripiṭaka Master says: the first two are from inside towards outside: 'What mark is this intrinsic nature, and what mark of distinction does it have?' The latter two are from outside towards inside: 'This marked thing is what intrinsic nature, and what distinction does this marked thing have?'
