Regarding the meanings of the seven limbs, Jing says: First is the meaning of what should be investigated, namely wishing to be skilled in the aggregates and so forth; second is the meaning of what should be gathered, namely either gathering teachings by one's own nature or gathering disciples and so forth by means of wealth and the Dharma; third is the meaning of what should be avoided, namely that evil friends and evil conditions must be avoided; fourth is the meaning of what should be induced, namely that the virtues in meditation should be induced by mental application; fifth is the meaning of what should be prevented, because one should prevent all evils; sixth is the meaning of what should be maintained, namely pure morality and so forth; seventh is [the meaning of what should be produced, namely that] the five superknowledges should be produced in reliance on concentration.
