Regarding the seven joys, they are the joys induced by the gnosis capable of cognizing the preceding seven meanings: First is the joy induced by hearing: the wisdom arisen from hearing cognizes the preceding meaning of what should be investigated, and joy is produced from this; second is the wisdom arisen from thought, which cognizes what should be gathered and what should be avoided; third is the wisdom arisen from cultivation, which cognizes the meaning of what should be induced. The initial fourth and fifth [treat] the meaning of abandoning the hindrances: the latter directly cognizes the meaning of what should be prevented, since inwardly abandoning the five hindrances and outwardly subduing other doctrines are both called preventing evil; sixth is the gnosis recollecting one's own virtues, which cognizes the meaning of what should be maintained; seventh is the gnosis of not giving rise to contentment with the inferior, which cognizes the meaning of what should be produced.
