Xuan says: 'Due to basis' means that the body of Jambudvīpa is the basis of applied preparation. 'Stage' refers to the grades of the desire-realm stage: the nine grades of greed and so forth subdued by the path of applied preparation, or alternatively the nine grades of the path of applied preparation as remedy. 'Due to not having cultivated concentration' means that in the path of applied preparation, fundamental concentration has not yet been cultivated; 'due to having cultivated, not obtained, and obtained' means that in the path of applied preparation, access concentration has already been cultivated, hence it is said 'already cultivated,' but fundamental concentration has not yet been obtained, hence it is said 'not obtained,' while access concentration has already been obtained, hence it is said 'obtained.' The preceding [clause] 'due to grade' explains the above 'applied preparation.' The statement 'due to the obstacle to purity of the basis' refers to the eight difficulties and so forth being called obstacles of the basis, which are retributive obstacles and obstacles to the path of seeing; this explains the above 'direct realization.' The statement 'due to purity of mental application' refers to karmic obstacles, which are obstacles to the path of cultivation; this explains the above 'continuity.' 'Remedies for those obstacles' refers to the path capable of remedying those karmic obstacles and retributive obstacles.
