Regarding their six bases, the fifty-fifth [fascicle] states: when determining there is faith; when bringing defilements to rest there are shame and embarrassment; when initiating wholesome deeds there are vigor and the three wholesome roots; when on the mundane path there is pliancy; when on the supramundane path there are non-negligence and equanimity; when gathering beings there is non-harming. The sixth fascicle of *Vijñaptimātra* has two explanations: The first says that wholesome [factors] do not necessarily arise together, using this as proof. The second says that except for pliancy, the remaining wholesome [factors] necessarily occur together. The *Viniścayasaṃgrahaṇī* states: 'The ten wholesome mental factors pervade wholesome minds in both concentrated and non-concentrated stages; in minds of concentrated stages, pliancy is added.' Hence it states they arise in six states. The eleven are spoken of according to what is prominent in each case. Among the eight topics, the third is cultivating the four immeasurables; the sixth is all other cultivation apart from the immeasurables. Among these eight topics, the first three—giving, morality, and cultivation—are external conventional cultivation of the three bases of meritorious actions; the next three are internal ultimate cultivation of the three wisdoms; the seventh and eighth are the perfection of the two benefits of virtue of knowledge and virtue of grace; therefore there are only eight topics.
