Regarding ‘It should be without defilement’: fascicle sixty-five says, ‘If there were no aggregates, there would be no form associated with the body...’ and speaking broadly up to ‘...likewise, this self would have no basis, no feeling, no conception, no thought, etc., and also no discrimination; thus this self, without effort, would be definitively liberated, which means it would have no defilement; therefore, this assertion is illogical.’ The syllogism is: The self should be without defilement and spontaneously liberated; because it is accepted not to pertain to the aggregates; like space, etc. Furthermore, one should not say ‘I have form, etc.’; because it is accepted not to pertain to the aggregates; like the horns of a hare, etc. ‘Should not pertain to each other’ has the meaning of ‘my having form, etc.’, not the meaning of subsumption.
