Here, because it speaks of views held by superior theorists who, relying on meditative absorption, attain mindfulness of previous abodes and recall phenomena of the form realm, it briefly mentions the first two and does not mention the latter two. Among the views concerning the posterior limit, regarding 'although seeing differences in ideation and feeling' and so forth: although they see differences between the substances of feeling and ideation and what belongs to the self, they do not see the differences in their specific characteristics; grasping them as belonging to the self, thirty-two views such as positing that the self has ideation arise. If they saw their specific characteristics, they would not grasp them as belonging to the self. As for not seeing their specific characteristics, Xianyang fascicle nine says: 'Not seeing the differences in the self's specific characteristics means not seeing that the self has no intrinsic substance whatsoever, and grasping these ideations and feelings as possessed by the self, whereupon they give rise to the thirty-two views.' The sixteen with ideation are: the four such as having form, the four such as having boundaries, the four such as uniform ideation, and the four such as pleasure and pain. That there are eight each for without ideation and neither with nor without ideation means: there are only the four such as having form and the four such as having boundaries, but lacking the four such as uniform ideation and the four such as pleasure and pain. The four such as having form, the four such as having boundaries, and the four such as limited ideation are collectively taken as ideation; the four such as having pleasure are collectively taken as feeling. As will be known below, those with ideation encompass all stages except the heaven of non-ideation and neither-ideation-nor-non-ideation; those without ideation refers to the heaven of non-ideation; those of neither refers to the sphere of neither-ideation-nor-non-ideation.
