Regarding "present new karma is destroyed by the cause of non-performance": This means that past bad karma is purged through ascetic practices, and present new bad karma is destroyed by the cause of non-performance so that it is not produced; both karmas being exhausted, there are subsequently no taints. "The Nirgrantha non-Buddhists" refers to the Nirgrantha-putras. The Cheng weishi lun says: "The shameless non-Buddhists, the sons of the Nirgranthas." Practicing naked asceticism, they are free from all ties; their external form being thus, it signifies that the internal is likewise.
