In the rationale for the arising of the clinging, knowing that possessing correct means brings about suffering, while possessing false means leads to pleasure, is due to past deeds: If so, why was it said earlier that suffering is brought about by the means of the present life? And further said: "through energetic striving, old karma is purged," and so forth? The explanation is: That person only relies on the primary cause of receiving retribution necessarily being past karma, and therefore it is called "past deeds." Furthermore, it is said that through present ascetic practices one can purge past evil; hence this latter clause is refuted by the author of the treatise.
