Under "Just as in serving a king, so it is with karma caused by various speeches, commerce, and so forth": one who previously created wholesome karma ought to obtain wealth, but by lying and flattery one then obtains precious treasures; both karmas ripen together, and this is called a "mixed cause." In this way, by the wholesome karma of previously obtaining wealth, it ought to ripen now, but relying on present farming, or relying on robbery, or relying on butchery, one then obtains wealth and happiness—this is called "mixed karma." For those who, although engaging in commerce and so forth, down to butchery, do not obtain wealth: because there was no prior wholesome merit that could obtain a fruit. As for karma that, like newly created [karma], leads to other existences: these are all karmas experienced in the present life. Supporting parents and so forth, down to obtaining precious wealth in the present through craftsmanship—all are purely present karma.
