Under pride, "regarding external and internal, high and low, superior and inferior": Jing says: 'Internal' is the internal body, and 'external' is worldly resources; comparing oneself to others, one gives rise to self-exaltation, which is called pride. Bei further explains: What difference is there between high and low, and superior and inferior? 'High' and 'low' are discussed in relation to others; 'superior' and 'inferior' are spoken of regarding oneself, but the essence of the treatise is no different. Ji says: 'Low regarding the external' refers to the pride of inferiority; 'high regarding the external' refers to pride, excessive pride, and pride beyond pride; because arrogance of superiority, wrong pride, and pride of self do not take the external as their object. 'Superior regarding the internal' refers to six prides: grasping the self as exalted, claiming to possess virtues one lacks, claiming to have many virtues when one has few, and so forth, are all internal superiority; the single kind called pride of inferiority is called internal inferiority, not being equal to others.
