In the second alternate explanation, Jing says: "Killing living beings as it truly is" and "distinctions of killing living beings": killing grass and trees may properly be called life, but not real killing; if killing sentient beings, it is called real killing. Regarding "killing what is to be killed, killing living beings, being called one who kills living beings": one must kill living beings possessing life to be called one who kills living beings, which shows that killing grass and trees is not called being one who kills living beings. Ji says: This then subsumes the nine into three. The statement "killing living beings as it truly is" is the first phrase; "distinctions of killing living beings" refers to the next seven phrases; "killing what is to be killed, being called one who kills living beings" is the ninth phrase. From the time before taking precepts and so on when one gives rise to goodness, one who performs killing is constantly called one who kills living beings; after taking precepts and so on, one does not receive that designation. Now, explaining it again: "killing living beings as it truly is" refers to the sixth and seventh phrases, namely, "in relation to all sentient beings" and "in relation to real sentient beings"; "distinctions of killing living beings" refers to the preceding five phrases; "killing what is to be killed" is the eighth phrase; "being called one who kills living beings" is the final phrase. The third alternate explanation subsumes the nine into one, collectively naming it the pudgala who kills living beings.
