In denying function, there are four: first, planting the body of the seed, namely 'there is no father'; second, sustaining, namely 'there is no mother'; third, going and coming, namely 'there is no this world'; fourth, karmic action producing birth: Jing says it means denying the karmic function of producing birth in the non-conceptual and formless realms. Ji says: it refers to 'there are no apparitionally born sentient beings', namely the intermediate existence (antarābhava). Previously, in the seventh fascicle, 'there are no apparitionally born sentient beings' meant that being unable to see the characteristics of birth and death, or being born into the formless realm, or entering nirvāṇa, one then denies them as non-existent, calling it 'no apparitional birth'; that was based on the existence of birth (upapattibhava), whereas this is based on intermediate existence; since the perspectives differ, they do not contradict each other. In 'action meaning function', there is that which can convey consciousness to the future birth existence, hence called karmic action producing birth. From 'arhat' down, all are real entities.
