In the fourth, explaining 'manifestation,' there are two kinds of manifestation. Master Śīlabhadra explains: 'Provisional manifestation' means that as long as sentient beings up to the tenth stage have not yet attained liberation, the Buddhas, World-Honoured Ones, manifest transformation bodies for those before the stages, and manifest bodies of other-enjoyment (parasaṃbhogakāya) for bodhisattvas on the stages—apparent enjoyment bodies with blue, yellow, and other radiances, coarse or fine—which transform, alter, arise, and cease in accordance with capacities and do not exist constantly; this is called provisional manifestation. 'Ultimate manifestation' is the body of self-enjoyment (svasaṃbhogakāya): just as humans in the desire realm, having inferior wholesome karma, attain a body of only eight cubits, while the gods' karma becomes progressively superior so that their bodies sequentially increase, up to the Akaniṣṭha heaven where their bodies are sixteen thousand yojanas tall; because the wholesome karma of the Buddha-fruit is supreme, all his physical faculties pervade the dharmadhātu, exceeding all measure.
