Eighth, explaining the faults of the three kinds of reflection. "Reflection that is not ultimate" means reflecting on ascetic practices and the like as the cause of nirvāṇa, unable to ultimately reach nirvāṇa. "Improper reflection" means reflecting on the self as having an end, having no end, and so on; giving rise to reflection on what should not be reflected upon is called improper reflection. "Inverted reflection" means reflecting on permanence, bliss, purity, and so on with respect to suffering, impermanence, and impurity; this is called inverted reflection.
