Question: A dharma lacking essence cannot constitute an objective condition; how can one say that by conditioning that which lacks essence, that which has essence is produced? Master Jing explains: This is a general statement. That which lacks essence per se belongs to what is grasped; that which can transform that which has essence is per se the objective division, an existent dharma of the paratantra, which can act as an objective condition to produce the subjective division. For example, when conditioning the eighteen realms and grasping the dharmas as definitely existent, there are objective divisions of the realms which serve as objective conditions when the mind of the subjective division arises; the aspect of grasping those objective divisions as definitely existent is itself without essence and belongs per se to what is grasped; that it can transform that which has essence refers specifically to the objective division. In the text it is spoken of generally, hence it says 'one nature lacks essence and can transform that which has essence'.
