Master Tai says: Regarding 'herein there is no dharma whatsoever capable of viewing another dharma': according to the principles of the Mahāyāna, all dharmas lack functional activity. When the mind views an object, it is not like pincers taking hold of a thing; therefore there is no dharma that grasps another dharma. When this very mind arises in reliance on an object, an image of such an object appears upon the mind, and so conventionally it is said that the mind can view the object. In actual principle, one should say that there are not multiple dharmas capable of viewing multiple dharmas. When the sūtra says 'whatsoever [little dharma],' it adduces the small to refute the large. It is like relying on the surface of a clear mirror, with the fundamental object as the condition, and thinking that separate from the fundamental substance there is an image to be known that appears on the mirror's surface.
