Masters Bei and Ji say: The Mahāyānasaṃgraha states that there is no other dharma capable of grasping another dharma; this consciousness arises and appears in such a manner. From this, the older interpretation held that outside the apprehending mind there is no other grasper, and outside the object there is no other grasped. Now the intention of this treatise is to distinguish that in the Mahāyāna, since all dharmas of viewing and image lack functional activity—'I am the grasper,' 'I am the grasped'—merely because the mind is pure, all images appear in the mind, which is therefore called 'grasping an object,' as detailed in the Buddhabhūmisūtra-śāstra. Furthermore, the meaning of this text is that not even a minor dharma can have functional activity, how much less could minds and characteristics have functional activity? Therefore, when dharmas arise, it is merely consciousness-only arising without functional activity; on this principle it differs from the former interpretation.
