Section seven: The gate of how many kinds. In brief, there are three kinds. First, with signs, which means purely contemplating conceptualized images. Second, seeking, which means directing attention to contemplate all dharmas specifically among those dharmas that one has not yet well understood, in order to understand them well. Third, investigating, which means having well understood dharmas, directing attention to contemplate them in order to realize liberation. Because these three contemplations gradually increase, they have degrees of superiority and inferiority. In distinguishing śamatha, precisely by immediately following the preceding three minds of contemplation, there are correspondingly three. Or there are eight, or four, as in the text.
