Section eight: The gate of practicing in accord with faith or Dharma. It says: Śamatha and vipaśyanā that rely on the Dharma are explained, and again śamatha and vipaśyanā that do not rely on the Dharma are explained; what does this mean? The Buddha replied: One who personally relies on the Dharma of the teachings to deliberate and cultivate śamatha and vipaśyanā is called one of sharp faculties who practices in accord with Dharma. If one does not rely on the sūtras and teachings, but directly trusts the instructions of meditation masters and the like to cultivate śamatha and vipaśyanā, this is called not relying on the Dharma, and is one of dull faculties who practices in accord with faith. Herein, according to the Sarvāstivādins: In the stage of the fifteen minds of the Śrāvaka's path of seeing, those of sharp faculties are called Dharma-followers, and those of dull faculties are called faith-followers; Bodhisattvas are exclusively Dharma-followers, and Pratyekabuddhas are also Dharma-followers. Varma says: The stages of hearing and thinking are called faith-followers; the stages of the four realizations of patience are called Dharma-followers; from the path of seeing onward is called signless practice. Now according to the Mahāyāna, the faith- and Dharma-practitioners of the two vehicles agree in meaning with the latter master. If based on the Abhidharma it also applies, so it does not contradict the statement of the former master either. In the stages of a bodhisattva, from dedication downward are faith-followers; the four wholesome roots are Dharma-followers; from the first bhūmi onward is signless practice. Before the bhūmis there are also distinctions of sharp and dull faculties; once they ascend the bhūmis, their lineage and faculties are uniform.
