The words 'If with respect to its name, etc., down to...' answer the third question of how contemplation practice eliminates characteristics. Now the reply is: previously, before the grounds, through investigation and searching according to reality in various ways, one knew that names and the rest are nominal; now, upon entering the path of seeing and realizing tathatā, object and wisdom are equal in nonconceptual practice, where one does not apprehend the nature of the name nor apprehend the basis of the name. In the approach of consciousness-only, names depend upon consciousness, and consciousness is the basis; therefore it says: 'If, when nothing is apprehended regarding the name and the intrinsic nature of the name, one also does not observe the characteristic of that upon which it depends; in this way they are eliminated.'
